After ending the season with a 2-1 victory over Torquay United in 1987/88, Scunthorpe had made the play-offs, but had to contend with a two-legged tie against their final opponents of the campaign.
A return to Plainmoor eight days after the final league fixture at the same venue would reverse the scoreline and put the Gulls in pole position going into the return leg in what would be the final ever game at the Old Show Ground. There wouldn't be a defeat for the final game, but it would emulate the previous two results on the pitch - a 1-1 draw. Steve Lister would notch the final goal at the stadium before it's demolition, converting from the penalty spot in front of nearly 6,500 people.
