Remembering past matches played by the Iron on May 19...

Former Iron manager and player born on this day: Ron Ashman (1926), Barrie Thomas (1937).

The Iron turned around a 1-0 first-legged deficit from the first leg, defeating Swansea City 3-1 in the second leg, to make it through to Wembley to face Leyton Orient in the Division Three Play-off Final.

The game needed extra time to settle the tie after United took the lead on the night and evened up the aggregate scoring, when Andy Dawson advanced forward and drilled into the net after just two minutes.

Manager Brian Laws opted to replace Jamie Forrester with Gareth Sheldon five minutes from time and that proved to be the masterstroke, with the game heading into an extra thirty minutes.

It was Sheldon who put Scunthorpe ahead in the 92nd minute. Six minutes later, the Swans were level on aggregate and had an all important away goal, swinging the tie in their favour.

However, in the 112th minute of the tie, Sheldon struck once more following a pinpoint Dawson left-winged cross to send United to Wembley, despite John Eyre getting dismissed for a second bookable offence shortly before half time in extra time.
