Iron goalkeeper Sam Slocombe is expecting a strong test at AFC Wimbledon on Saturday afternoon but believes that the players are in a good frame of mind for the game.
United are yet to be defeated in their opening three league games and Slocombe is targeting another three points to add to the clubs seasonal tally.He told The Iron Player: “I think it will be a tough game but most away games this season will be.
“We’re in a good mind set coming from the games we’ve played and I think it’s a good thing that we’re disappointment not to have won the last couple of matches.
“It’s definitely a game that we can go and win, especially if we put in performances like we have in the last couple of matches and take our chances when we get them.
“It’s very early in the season and we’ve got to realise that we’re only three weeks in but if we go out and play our best then we’re confident of taking the three points.”
Scunthorpe played almost 400 minutes of football before conceding their first goal of the season – Luke Howell’s strike for Dagenham and Redbridge last weekend.
But Slocombe has highlighted the importance of putting that result to bed ahead of the clash with the Dons.
He continued: “It’s gone now so there’s no point dwelling over it.
“It was disappointing and we really should have seen the game out, the boys know that, but we’ve got to learn from it and make sure that we don’t make the same mistakes again.
“It’s nice to know that we’re solid from a defensive point of view but the one thing the game has shown us is that if you make a mistake, you’re going to get punished for it no matter what league you’re in.
“One of the biggest positives from the first couple of games is that I haven’t been that busy and we’ve dominated during most of those matches.”
Whilst there is still a long way to go in the campaign, the 25-year-old is confident that United will be up towards the top end of the division by the end of the season.
And Slocombe is just taking each game as it comes, with the immediate aim of picking up another three points on Saturday.
He added: “I think we only really need to be looking at the table towards the end of March or the start of April and if we’re challenging by that time then that will put us in a great position for the end of the season.
“The next two games against AFC Wimbledon and Newport provide us with a good opportunity to get another little run going and we know that if we play to the best of our ability, we can win those games.
“One team may sneak into the Play-Offs at the end of the season but the rest will be up and around there all season so as long as we can keep up there, we’ll put ourselves in a good position.
“We’re not looking at March now, we’re looking at each game individually and we need to win the majority of them to set us up for the end of the season.”
