Big Match Preview: Iron v Chesterfield

16 April 2017

The Iron head into Monday’s clash with Chesterfield looking to make it four straight victories on home turf.

Graham Alexander’s side have taken nine points out of a possible nine in matches against Rochdale, Bradford City and Bolton Wanderers respectively - a run which United will be aiming to continue.

The hosts also go into the fixture off the back of a solid 1-0 away triumph over MK Dons on Good Friday, where Ivan Toney’s first half header was enough for all three points.

Alexander will be without on-loan midfielder Matt Crooks for the remainder of the campaign, after the 23-year-old picked up a knee injury in the win over Bolton Wanderers.

Luke Daniels (ribs), Charlie Goode (ankle) and Tom Hopper (shin) will also miss the rest of the season.

Goals from Josh Morris, Kevin van Veen and Sam Mantom wrapped up a comfortable 3-0 victory for Graham Alexander’s men earlier on in the campaign.

After a goal-less first half at the Proact in which the visitors were unlucky not be ahead in, they deservedly got the breakthrough four minutes into the second period. It came from the left boot of Morris, whose free-kick on the right evaded everyone and nestled into the opposing corner of the goal.

Van Veen then doubled United’s advantage on the hour with a low shot that beat Ryan Fulton at his near post.

The Dutchman turned provider in 85th minute, as he slipped in Mantom, who finished coolly from inside the penalty area to round things off in style.

Match Reports

Report: Iron 3-1 Chesterfield

17 April 2017

The Iron were 3-1 victors against Chesterfield on Monday, assuring a top six finish for the season.

The lead came during the first half through a Paul McGinn own-goal after a Josh Morris corner, before Ivan Toney doubled the advantage not long after.

The third arrived in the second period, with Toney bundling the ball past Stuckmann following Kevin van Veen’s throughball.

The travelling Spireites did have the chance to celebrate one goal, however. Tom Anderson headed home with only a few seconds of the game to go.

United entered the League One encounter having made no changes to the side that secured a vital 1-0 win at MK Dons on Good Friday.

The home side started brightly, but couldn’t create much more than half chances in the opening ten minutes.

Dan Gardner’s cross from the left wing on ten minutes bounced awkwardly for Joe Anyon, but the shotstopper held on at the second attempt.

A couple of minutes after Gardner’s dangerous cross it was the Iron’s turn to go close but, after the Spireites only partially cleared, Jamie Ness’ shot on the half volley went narrowly wide.

Neal Bishop was next to try his luck from a similar distance to Ness’ previous effort, but the deflection for a Spireites defender took the sting off the ball, and Stuckmann held well.

United continued to pile forward, and created another opening, with Stephen Dawson’s effort parried away only for a corner.

The resulting corner was sent in by Morris, and Bishop rose the highest, but only to see his vicious header hit the side netting.

The home faithful didn’t have to wait much longer to find their opening goal, and it came courtesy of a Morris corner, which was flicked on before hitting the unfortunate McGinn, confirming the own-goal.

Chesterfield were next to send a dangerous effort on goal, with just under ten minutes to go until the break, but Connor Dimaio’s curled effort went just wide.

Then the Iron piled forward and, after Bishop crossed deep, Toney climbed above Stuckmann to double the home side’s lead.

The goal would be the last chance of an entertaining and fruitful half for the Iron.

It didn’t take the Iron long to create their first major opportunity of the second half, after Ness was fouled around 25 yards from Stuckmann’s goal. Toney stepped up to take it, and forced the Spireites goalkeeper into a smart save. The resulting corner was then headed over.

United could have had a third on 55 minutes after Toney capitalised on a loose Chesterfield pass before playing Paddy Madden through on goal, but Stuckmann pulled off a class save to deny the Irishman.

That wouldn’t be Madden’s best chance, either, as the ball fell to him in the Chesterfield box, but on the turn his effort cannoned down off the crossbar and out.

Toney settled the game in the 74th minute when he latched onto van Veen’s throughball, before bundling it past Stuckmann.

Van Veen nearly added one of his own five minutes before the end after he met Craig Davies’ knock down, but Stuckmann came out quick to close the angle down for the Dutchman.

The visitors scored a consolation goal with the final kick of the game, as Anderson headed home from a cross on the left wing.

The would be the last action of the game, as the Iron ran out 3-1 winners.
