PUT IT RIGHT FOR THE FANS

6 February 2017

Captain Stephen Dawson feels he and his Iron team-mates didn’t reach the levels set so far this season, during their away defeat against Southend United.

Murray Wallace’s header had given the visitors an early lead at Roots Hall, but the hosts fought back to take all three points.

From Dawson’s point of view, there were certain facets of the performance which could have been better, and he stated it’s up to the squad to make things right for the supporters.

Speaking to The Iron PlayerHD, Dawson said: “It’s disappointing.

“We win together and we lose together, so we’re hurting. I didn’t think any of us were anywhere near our usual standards.

“There’s a lot to put right this week, and we’ve got to get our heads down.

“I can only apologise to the fans, because it was nowhere near good enough on our behalf, and they made a long journey.”

The Irishman felt Phil Brown’s side were deserved winners on the day, and says it’s vital to deliver a strong showing in next weekend’s fixture at home to Shrewsbury Town.

Dawson highlighted the Shrews will provide a stern test, whilst adding that the display will have to be a strong one if the Iron are to get the win.

“The better team won on the day, no excuses from me, there never is,” Dawson stated.

“They’re in the play-offs for a reason, which you could see. I can only apologise again, because from my view as a captain it wasn’t good enough.

“We’ll go again, but that isn’t an excuse.

“The response is key now, but I believe next week is a big week, and we know that.

“We’re in Monday for a long week, because we’ve got to put that performance right.

“The record speaks for itself at home, but Shrewsbury won’t be coming with that intent.

“Under the new manager they’ve picked up a lot of points, so they’re coming good.

“We’ve got to remain focused now, and hopefully we can put things right for the fans, because it wasn’t good enough.”
