Report: Doncaster Rovers U18s 2-4 Iron U18s

11 January 2021

The Iron's Under-18s side returned to action after their Christmas break with a hard-earned fourth win in a row, winning 4-2 away at Doncaster Rovers on Saturday morning.

"After going a goal behind, we came back to win it late on. We showed good character, especially without a couple of key players," explained Professional Development Phase Coach Steve Thornber. "It was very pleasing to get that win."

The game got off to a slow start, with it being the first game since December 15th, and the hosts started brightly, going in front on 23 minutes after a counter-attack.

United began to get back into it and tweaked the formation, although they suffered a big blow on 30 minutes when Harry Baker came off with a knee injury.

Scunthorpe levelled in the 39th minute when Harry Lewis made a positive run, beat a couple of players and shot from the edge of the box right into the top corner.

Lewis came close again five minutes later, firing over just before half-time.

The second period saw the Iron start brightly and get into the game quickly.

The 68th minute saw Jack Moore-Billam have a shot which the goalkeeper tipped around the post.

Cameron Wilson was a key player on the day, getting on the ball and driving forward, taking players on and he saw a shot saved on 75 minutes.

Then, Oliver Lobley played Lewis in over the top, who tried to chip the goalkeeper but saw his chance tipped over the crossbar.

With 80 minutes gone, Wilson did well to win the ball, back, drove forward but saw the goalkeeper save his effort.

Pushing forward, United managed to take the lead on 87 minutes as Moore-Billam drove through, beat a couple of defenders and the goalkeeper couldn't stop his shot.

The Iron pushed forward again and made it 3-1 in the 89th minute with a deserved goal from Wilson as he received the ball, turned and shot left-footed across the goalkeeper and into the far corner.

With 90 minutes gone, Doncaster pushed everyone forward and managed to pull a goal back.

Straight after though, Scunthorpe went up the other way and made it 4-2 as Charlie Strouther finished at the far post following a cross by Wilson.

"It was a really good performance in spells, we started slowly but it was pleasing that we continued our good streak in the league," Thornber added.

They return to action a week on Saturday when they host Rotherham United.
