Under-18s draw at home to Hartlepool

20 April 2023

The Iron's Under-18s drew 2-2 at home to their Hartlepool United counterparts in the third of their set of fixtures in the Merit League, with the game taking place at Appleby-Frodingham.

It was a real dominant performance from the hosts but unfortunately they didn't come away with all three points.

Scunthorpe had a number of chances in the first half, with Harrison Poulter coming close, while the away side had a breakaway that led to a free-kick on the edge of the box on 25 minutes. The ball was sent into the area and was headed in at the back post.

The Iron then levelled on the stroke of half-time as a ball from Ben Pike found Poulter, who did really well to elude the defender and send the ball to the back post, with Harry Elliott-Bell converting home.

The hosts came out in the second half dominant again, with a number of good openings.

Josh Cunningham played the ball to Poulter on the edge of the box, who managed to turn but hit the ball just wide.

Charley Strouther also came close, sending an effort wide, while Lucas Dickinson also saw an effort blocked.

Hartlepool again scored on a breakaway though, as a free-kick led to a corner, which they scored from. Goalkeeper Ewan Oxborough came out and got a hand to it, but it just hit Cunningham and unfortunately went in.

Right at the death, on 89 minutes, Oxborough sent a long ball forward as Scunthorpe went more direct and got bodies forward, which was flicked on by Charlie Burden-Whittleton, and Josh Robertson got on the end of it to tap past the goalkeeper.

"In all fairness we dominated the game and it's disappointing to not take all three points," said Professional Development Phase Coach Rob Watson.

"However, after the back-to-back run of games, of Friday, Tuesday and Thursday, and with a weakened squad, it was a really good point against a decent side."

The game also saw Under-15 Jacob Cawthra and Under-16 Charlie Nicholson come on as late substitutes, while Under-16 Oakley Hill started.

The Under-18s play their final game of the season away at Rotherham United next Friday (April 28th).

IRON: Oxborough, Abraham, Cunningham, Pike, Hill, Elliott-Bell, Dickinson (Nicholson, 84), Robertson, Strouther (Cawthra, 84), Burden-Whittleton, Poulter.
