The Iron re-entered the League One play-off zone on goal difference after they drew 2-2 at League One champions Leicester City on Friday night.
Michael Morrison put the Foxes ahead in the opening period but Paul Hayes sublimely levelled soon after the break.
Grant McCann put Scunthorpe into the lead from the penalty spot but Morrison had the last say when he headed in the Foxes' equaliser.
Tranmere, who are United's main rivals for a play-off spot, are in action at home to Yeovil on Saturday and boss Nigel Adkins will be hoping for a slip-up.
The Iron went into their away clash at Leicester City making no changes from the team which drew 3-3 at Northampton on Tuesday night.
Joe Murphy started in goal, while Cliff Byrne, Krystian Pearce, David Mirfin and Andrew Wright formed the defence.
The midfield consisted of Matt Sparrow, Liam Trotter, McCann and Martyn Woolford, while Gary Hooper partnered Hayes up front.
Josh Lillis, Joseph Mills, Sam Togwell, Ben May and Henri Lansbury were the substitutes.
The Walkers Stadium was buzzing, as the League One champions entered the pitch to a rapturous applause from a sell-out home following.
However, it was Scunthorpe who looked more of a threat going forward and Hooper had the first real chance of the game eight minutes in when he capitalised on a slip-up at the back to race through on goal, he took a heavy touch though just as he was advancing and goalkeeper David Stockdale gathered the ball to safety.
Wright, after an aerial collision with Max Gradel left him cut, was replaced by Mills in the left-back slot shortly after.
Leicester's first chance arrived on the 15 minute mark when Murphy was forced into an outstanding low stop to keep Matt Fryatt's low effort from the right out.
Just three minutes later they were to go ahead when Michael Morrison latched on to a corner from the left to hit the back of the net from five yards.
Scunthorpe were trying to get back into the game but the Foxes soaked up any pressure thrown at them in the first half.
Gradel tested Murphy with a free-kick from 25 yards later on in the opening period as the Foxes looked to double their advantage.
Shortly after, Hayes curled a set-piece from an acute angle over the crossbar in the 44th minute.
Leicester came so close to making it two just moments later as Fryatt turned Murphy inside out and fired in a shot which was cleared off the line by Mills, and then Dyer quickly directed the rebound against the crossbar.
There was a change at the break, as Hooper, who had taken a knock in the first half, was replaced by Lansbury.
And he made a good impact playing through the centre too, been able to affect play more than he often does when placed out on the right.
McCann had the first chance of the second half on 54 minutes but he curled a left-footed free-kick from 25 yards just over the crossbar.
It was an improved second-half display from United and they levelled in the 56th minute when Hayes superbly controlled Sparrow's cross into the box, and flicked the ball into space before burying his shot past Stockdale from 12 yards. It was another first class strike from the 19 goal frontman.
Straight away after, McCann struck over the crossbar after good work by Lansbury as a resurgent Scunthorpe continued to attack with confidence.
Then, just five minutes later, Scunthorpe went ahead as Hayes was fouled in the penalty box by Bruno Berner. Referee Mark Heywood pointed to the spot and Grant McCann stepped up to send Stockdale the wrong way, firing to the 'keeper's left for his 10th goal of the season.
The lead didn't last long though as the Foxes levelled through Morrison soon after. The defender rose highest to head home the leveller at the far post. It was his second goal of the game.
There was a huge blow for Scunthorpe with just under five minutes left as Woolford was replaced by Togwell. He was stretchered off after a heavy challenge.
Four minutes of stoppage time were played but nothing could separate the two sides as United claimed a credible point at the league leaders.
They are next in action on Tuesday when they host Cheltenham Town for their penultimate game of the season.
Attendance: 30,942 (697 away).
