United defeated Barnsley 1-0 to reach the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Paul Hayes' second-half goal sealed a tight encounter against his former club, and Scunthorpe's Championship rivals, as they started 2010 in style.
Entering the game, the Iron made four changes from the side beaten 3-1 by West Bromwich Albion on Monday.
Josh Lillis came into the side for shoulder injury victim Joe Murphy, while Cliff Byrne and Martyn Woolford replaced the suspended Andrew Wright and Grant McCann. Forte came in for Michael O'Connor, who had been suffering from a virus, as the final change. Gary Hooper's comeback from an ankle injury was delayed for another week because of a virus.
Byrne, David Mirfin, Rob Jones and Marcus Williams formed the defence, while the midfield consisted of Garry Thompson, Josh Wright, Sam Togwell and Woolford formed the midfield, while Forte and Hayes led the attack.
Kenny Milne was named as a substitute for the first time this season, with Sam Slocombe, Rory Coleman, Ben May, Matt Sparrow, Andy Crosby and O'Connor also on the bench.
Scunthorpe were bidding to reach the fourth round of the competition for the first time since 2004, as they seeked to see off the side that beat this stage that year.
For the second home match in a row, the Iron kicked off shooting towards the Doncaster Road terrace, and visiting goalkeeper Luke Steele was tested in the opening minute when Forte's low shot from distance drew a routine stop from him.
Ten minutes later, Woolford's testing cross also drew a stop from Steele as the hosts pressed for an early goal.
Soon after, Hayes and Forte linked up well as the former played in the latter, but Steele got out quick to stop the Barbados international.
On the 20 minute mark, Josh Wright's inswinging free-kick was deflected wide for a corner as Scunthorpe continued pushing forward.
The Tykes' first real chance arrived shortly after as Daniel Bogdanovich headed just wide of goal after good work by Anderson De Silva.
Soon after that goal, Forte volleyed a strike just over the crossbar after receiving Hayes' flick-on.
On the counter attack in the 35th minute, Hayes burst through after Williams passed and played in Thompson, whose low cross-cum-shot from the left went just wide of goal, with Forte just failing to get a toe on the end of it.
Soon after, Thompson capitalised on a mistake by Steele and chested the ball down past the goalkeeper just outside the area, but he volleyed wide of goal, which the ball just not sitting right for him.

Like the closing stages of the first half, the start of the second period was a quiet and tame affair, with Milne - fresh from rehabilitation in America following two knee operations last season - looking comfortable at the heart of the defence.
Hugo Colace tested Lillis with a clipped effort from the edge of the area, then Milne got forward for an Iron free-kick and hassled a deflection wide.
In the 65th minute, Butterfield drove a shot wide for the visiting side, with chances still restricted between two equal sides.
Nevertheless, just three minutes later, Scunthorpe went ahead as Forte did well to win possession down the right flank and send the ball into the area for Hayes, who rifled past Steele for his seventh goal of the season, and second of the campaign against the Tykes.
