RESERVES KNOCKED OUT OF CUP
Leicester City Reserves 5-0 Scunthorpe United Reserves
Report from the Greene King Stadium
United's reserve side were thumped 5-0 by their Leicester City counterparts in the Totesport.com Cup semi-final in Hinckley on Tuesday afternoon.
The Foxes front two of Elliott Chamberlain (two) and Adi Yussuf (three) ran riot as Scunthorpe were sunk.
The Iron won a corner in the second minute as Donal McDermott raced through and forced the City goalkeeper to put the ball out.
United had a more experienced side out against a young City side, and Grant McCann struck a volley well wide of goal in the fourth minute.
Jonathan Forte then caused danger as he was played clear down the left-hand side and sent the ball across before it was cleared.
McDermott, who was very much involved in the opening stages, was trying to create openings for the away side.
Chamberlain helped put Leicester ahead in the seventh minute though when he squared the ball for Yussuf inside the area who slotted home beyond Lillis.
Then the favour was repaid shortly after as Yussuf played a great throughball in to Chamberlain, who raced through and fired in the second.
Soon after, McDermott had a shot blocked as he tried to get his team back into the game.
McCann had a shot deflected over the crossbar on 21 minutes after good play from Forte.
Kenny Milne made a great block from Yussuf soon after as the striker was played through and attempted to add to his team's lead.
Cross struck wide for a Foxes goal-kick on the half-hour mark after Josh Wright played him in.
Milne was replaced in the 34th minute, as second year youth team player Jonathan Williams came on for him.
Forte struck a shot well wide just three minutes later as McDermott worked an opening and set up the Barbados international.
Jake Picton, who had moved from right-back to the centre, made a good challenge five minutes before half-time to stop Chamberlain from making it three, blocking just inside the area.
Forte drew a cracking save from the City goalkeeper on the stroke of half-time, being teed up by McDermott, the Foxes custodian made a great stop from the striker.
The hosts continued the second half as they finished the first, with the front two of Yussuf and Chamberlain always a threat, and the away side struggling to create chances at this stage.
Andrew Wright came close ten minutes into the second half, volleying into the arms of the City goalkeeper.
Cross pinged the ball across goal soon after as United tried to fashion out their first goal of the afternoon.
In the 66th minute, Welshman Chamberlain curled a shot into the bottom left-hand corner of the net to make it three for Leicester and seemingly kill off any hopes United had to levelling matters.
Two minutes later, Jones looped a header over the crossbar from McCann's (who would shortly be replaced by Jordan Thewlis) corner. Shortly after, Forte broke into the area and drew a good save from the goalkeeper.
Robbie Burns curled a free-kick over the crossbar for Leicester with ten minutes left.
Yussuf made it four on 82 minutes as he raced through and lobbed the ball into the back of the net to make it four.
And they added a final goal as Nathan Hicks twisted and turned on the edge of the box and sent the ball in for Yussuf, who converted home at the back post.
There was a media frenzy at the game, with it being referee Mark Halsey's first match of the season.
He is in remission following two operations for chemotherapy and radiotherapy after being diagnosed with lymphoma last August.
