United avoided slipping into the bottom three of the Championship, with relegation rivals Sheffield Wednesday getting beaten 1-0 at West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday night.

The Owls had held firm against the second-placed Baggies until the 79th minute when Robert Koren (pictured) notched a superb late strike.

As a result, they stay one point below Scunthorpe in the division having played one game more.

Other rivals Crystal Palace, now managed by Paul Hart, were beaten 1-0 by Bristol City at Selhurst Park, with Chris Iwelumo scoring a late goal.

Because of those two results, United remain 20th with twelve games left to play, starting with Saturday's trip to Ipswich Town.

The Tractor Boys warmed up well for this weekend's clash by defeating Cardiff City 2-0 through a Daryl Murphy brace.

Bottom-placed Peterborough United gave their hopes of staying up a boost by defeating Sheffield United 1-0 at London Road. Craig Mackail-Smith put away the decisive goal.

Six points above Nigel Adkins' side at present, Preston North End registered a 1-1 home draw with Doncaster Rovers, while Neil Warnock's Queens Park Rangers eased their relegation fears with a 2-0 victory over Plymouth Argyle.

Elsewhere in the league, Swansea City were 1-0 victors at Watford.
